Flood alleviation scheme
Lithos Consulting worked alongside ARUP to perform the role of ground investigation contractor as part of an assessment for proposed flood defences along the River Loxley in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield.
Vickers Tank Factory
Due to the site’s former military use, historical plans prior to 1991 showed no development at the site. However, Lithos obtained information about former activities and the original layout of the tank factory via discussion with former employees.
Old Pioneer and new Haribo
HARIBO needed land to build a new factory and wanted to reduce ground-related uncertainties to a practical minimum. Lithos were commissioned, via the commercial property agent Gent Visick, to advise on environmental liabilities, and implications for new foundations.
Sheffield Hallam University

Cemetery Road, Pudsey
Lithos were initially commissioned to undertake a site investigation of this former textile mill which occupied 4 hectares of land in Pudsey, Leeds. Further work included a remediation strategy, supervision and validation of remediation works and soil cover validations.
Swan Hunter Shipyard
TAG were seeking funding to develop a wind turbine manufacturing facility on the former Swan Hunter shipyard in Teesside. Lithos reviewed existing data to assist the Funder’s due diligence appraisal, most notably with respect to environmental liabilities.

Interserve Construction requested Lithos’ assistance to enable discharge of ground-related planning conditions associated with construction of a new divisional police headquarters in Leeds.

Arndale Centre, Leeds
Lithos carried out a site investigation at the Arndale Centre in order to determine whether an access road to the multi-storey car park could be lowered to accommodate HGVs.
Boothferry Park, Hull
This 4.5 hectare site was the former home of Hull City FC and comprised both the derelict football stadium and a supermarket car park. Lithos prepared a remediation strategy & specification for the works necessary to render it suitable for residential redevelopment
University of Leeds
Lithos undertook site investigations on two parcels of land on the University of Leeds' campus. Development proposals for both sites included temporary structures, to be used by students and staff over 5 years whilst renovations to existing buildings took place.
Cold Drawn Products
Lithos worked closely with the Client's preferred remediation Contractor to develop a remediation strategy and enable them to derive costed proposals. This allowed the landowner to determine a realistic value for the site which had had over 150 years of industrial use.
Lithos’ investigation targeted the footprint of a former care home to delineate the lateral & vertical extent of a large, backfilled basement. Lithos advised on foundation solutions and supervised the subsequent preparatory earthworks.
Until 2012 the site was operated by a company that specialised in reconditioning large diesel engines (recovered from ships, hospitals, power stations etc). The site is situated within a groundwater Source Protection Zone, an environmental setting of high sensitivity.
Lindley Moor, Huddersfield
Although greenfield, this site was subject to challenges associated with topography and shallow mineworkings in the Soft Bed Coal. In addition to site investigation services, Lithos supervised the drill & grout works required to render the site suitable for development.
Hull City FC
Lithos were commissioned to investigate the former home of Hull City FC, and adjacent land extending across a total area of 4.5 hectares. Subsequent work included gas monitoring and remediation supervision.
Allerton Bywater Colliery closed in the early 1990s, and in 2000 became the HCA’s second Millennium Community – an initiative to ‘set the standard for 21st Century living, and to serve as a model for the creation of new communities in England'.
Previous industrial usage and topography provided many geotechnical challenges at this former paper mill near Tadcaster. Lithos prepared a remediation strategy for Redrow Homes and subsequently provided part-time supervision and validation of the remediation works.
Willerby School, Hull
BAM instructed Lithos to undertake a site investigation at a school in Willerby near Hull, which is to be developed and enlarged to include a 3-storey classroom complex and sports hall.
Anaerobic digestion plant
Lithos were commissioned by the existing landowner to provide a geoenvironmental appraisal of a site prior to the construction of a new Anaerobic Digestion plant.
Underground storage tank
Lithos were commissioned by the home owner to project manage/supervise the activities of a specialist tank removal contractor, and provide a verification report to the Local Authority to enable discharge of the outstanding planning condition.
Lithos' initial ground investigation at this former Water Works uncovered two underground reservoirs, relic foundations and contamination. Subsequently, Lithos prepared a remediation strategy and supervised remediation works on the site prior to housing development.
Waste classification, Leeds
Lithos reviewed an existing contamination assessment for this site and suggested a more suitable methodology for assessing the extent of contamination. This allowed waste to be properly described and will result in significant financial savings for our Client.
JB Springs Ltd
Before negotiating a new lease, the lessor needed a land condition report to assess if any pollution had been caused by the previous occupiers, under the 'Polluter Pays' principal.
Outer Space Film Studio
Lithos undertook additional asbestos sampling and provided support and advice so that Vinci could produce an Asbestos Management Plan.
Lithos prepared a site condition report when Environmental Permits were being upgraded to Industrial Emission Permits.
Constar due diligence
Lithos provided a ground contamination assessment to assure potential new owners that there were no significant ground-related liabilities. Historically the site had been used to manufacture aircrafts and latterly was used to blow mould plastics for the drinks industry.
Our MMP for this site was audited by the EA as part of their Waste Soils Campaign. The EA's positive response gave our client reassurance that they were not in breach of any waste legislation or at risk of heavy fines.
Doncaster Delivery Unit
Lithos were commissioned to produce a Remediation Strategy and to address LPA concerns. We undertook a detailed review of the site’s hydrogeological setting, available ground investigation data and publicly available groundwater dip data.
Holbeck Delivery Unit
Lithos were commissioned to provide a geoenvironmental appraisal of the site, specifically designed to address land quality questions raised by Leeds City Council with respect to risks to groundwater and surface water.
Howdon Metro Depot
Lithos were asked to liaise with the LPA and Environment Agency and develop a Materials Management Plan (MMP) for the construction phase, allowing the retention and reuse of suitable material.
Lithos undertook a site investigation on this 12ha site with highly variable topography and a legacy of coal mining. Whilst the majority of the site is greenfield, a colliery (including 3 shafts) had been present in the far east, as well as a fourth shaft in the west.
Lithos were initially commissioned to carry out a review of 3rd party data of a 7-hectare parcel of farmland. The 3rd party desk study acknowledged the presence of a coal seam. However, it found no evidence of either coal, or any workings.
Lithos were part of the 'Big Build' project for Variety (a children’s charity). We undertook an exploratory geoenvironmental appraisal and provided an earthworks specification for land at Springwater School in Harrogate.
Lithos were commissioned by Sutcliffe Construction Ltd to undertake a geoenvironmental appraisal of land which was formerly a cotton mill before it was demolished prior to sale in 2011.
